1 Introduction

OpenJALE, the Open Jupyter Authoring and Learning Environment, is an open, opinionated classic Jupyter notebook based environment for authoring and working with notebook based learning materials.

It’s open not least in the sense that you are free to set up the environment as you want by installing and enabling particular extensions to customise the environment. It’s opinionated to the extent that I have opinions about which extensions I like, and how they can be used to together to create particular effects in a teaching and learning environment. Not all the available Jupyter extensions are listed here, perhaps because I don’t like them, perhaps because I don’t think they are relevant, perhaps because or forgot or haven’t got round to them yet. The document describes a range of currently available extensions that support customisation of a Jupyter environment to enrich both the authoring and end user experience.

For example, extensions are available to support productivity and quality processes, rendering of content, and activity design and presentation.

Many of the extensions described have been and are being used in modules in presentation, as well as being used to support their production. As such, many of the opinions are based on experience of, and practice in, using various set-ups to support the production and presentation of teaching and learning over the last five years or so.
